Farmington Hills Wasp Control
Preferred expert by 760 WJR’s Inside Outside Guys
Farmington Hills is known for its parks. This includes Heritage Park and many others. You may see a lot of wildlife in these parks: birds, bugs, and everything in between. One thing that is common in Farmington Hills (in parks and really anywhere you go) is wasps. Understanding the basics of Farmington Hills wasp control will keep them from interfering with your best laid plans.
What Type of Wasps Are Located In Farmington Hills?
One of the most common wasps in the area is the Yellow Jacket wasp. They may be confused with other wasps such as a hornet or paper wasp. Yellow Jacket wasps are typically ½ inch long. They do have a stinger and their sting can be dangerous to humans who have an allergy or are stung multiple times (or just those who, like me, have a strong disdain for pain).
Yellow Jackets are social hunters that live in colonies. Their nests can be located in stumps, logs, in leaf litter, and even in and around human-made structures. Depending on conditions, a queen Yellow Jacket can expand a colony to 4,000 wasps. If you notice a Yellow Jacket, it is important to take early Farmington Hills wasp control action.
Yellow Jackets are arguably the most dangerous stinging insect in Farmington Hills and the United States. Sure they don’t have a cool name like murder hornet, but there simply aren’t enough of those in the US to even be on the same scale as yellow jackets. Yellow Jackets can be unpredictable and will sting you if their nest is disturbed. Speaking of unpredictable, one joined me in my life jacket while I was water skiing – I did not see that one coming. Yellow Jacket colonies near maturity around late summer or early fall. They will scavenge for food and other sources of nutrition. They like to feed on sweets (fruit, soft drinks, etc.) but can also feed on meat. The normal flow is for the workers to gather proteins to feed to the developing larvae in exchange for a sweet secretion.
The Solution to Yellow Jacket Activity
Yellow Jacket activity can change from season to season. The best thing to do is to keep their food source under control. Since they are a predatory insect, keeping the general insect population down will help. Next steps for effective Farmington Hills wasp control include:
- Regular inspection
- Exclusion and repairs
- Species identification
- Worker to nest tracking
- Nest removal
- Altering landscaping or structural features that are conducive to re-occupation
Vigilance
Nothing stays the same for long in Farmington Hills. Changes in construction, landscaping, weather, etc. will bring changes to the Yellow Jacket populations, where those populations hang out, and how those wasps behave. As you know, home foundations settle and will leave cracks and crevices in the foundation or simply between existing seams. Yellow Jackets could potentially use this as a nesting site for one of their colonies. Keeping a regular eye out for developing issues or potential issues will help stay ahead of the game.
