Many insects depend on plant life to survive and thrive. A few insects on a plant is typically nothing to get alarmed about, but when populations spike, damage to the plant can become significant. Some insects will attack the foliage directly, some attack the roots of the plant, and others will actually attack the plant from within. It is important to know what is causing the plant damage.

If the environment can be changed to reduce harborage or make the affected plants less desirable, that is the best solution. In other instances strategic pruning of the plant or surrounding plants may produce the desired result. Some insects will need treatment directed at the adult stage while others need control of the larval stage. Some insect and plant combinations will be best treated with a systemic treatment through injection. It is important to consult an expert in the field to understand what treatment option will be most effective and what needs to be done to avoid affecting non-target species. Over ambitious treatments will negatively impact pollinators that are necessary for healthy plant development.
