How to get rid of mosquitoes in your pool and keep water bugs out

With summer quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about getting rid of mosquitoes and water bugs in your pool.

Tips for getting rid of mosquitoes and ways to keep water bugs out of your pool

Use Lights – Lights will attract bugs, so you can set up a series of lights around your pool 30-40 feet away to draw bugs in. Since insects are cold blooded you can attract them to the lights and then many will die because of the heat and lights.

Algaecide – One of the main reasons you have water bugs in your pool is because they have a food source. Cleaning your pool is the first step to keep water bugs out of your pool. Killing the food source with an algaecide is a good first step. You should also be vacuuming out your pool consistently to keep pests out of it. Dead bugs are a potential food source for other insects. If you don’t skim and vacuum your pool, you are leaving yet another food source to attract pests.

Liquid detergent – Water bugs need air to breath, and they get this by coming to the surface of your pool. You can interrupt this process by spraying a layer of dishwasher detergent to break the surface tension of the pool to keep water bugs from bringing air back underwater with them. This can be effective for keeping water bugs out of your pool because if they can’t breath they will die.

Get rid of mosquito larvae – Another food source for water bugs is mosquito larvae. Follow the tips below to learn how to get rid of mosquitoes in your pool.

Of course these methods are not always the complete solution so if you want to be sure to keep water bugs out of your pool, contact a professional pest control service.

Tips on how to get rid of mosquitoes in your pool

Keep your pool running- Make sure you keep your pool running for long periods during the day. Mosquitoes love stagnant water and if you don’t keep the water moving they will use that opportunity to lay eggs in your pool.

Chlorine shock – You can also shock your pool with chlorine, however this often times won’t fully get the job done, the chemical balance in your pool needs to be just right for this to work, so in addition to managing the pool chemicals, getting a professional pest control service involved is always going to be your best option.

Pool toys and gear –  Another area to focus on is pool toys and gear storage and upkeep. If you have pool toys and gear stored near your pool, be sure the area is dry and there isn’t any water pooling in these storage areas. If you aren’t taking the gear out consistently and stagnant water pools form this can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
