Killing the food source with an algaecide is a good first step. You should also be vacuuming out your pool consistently to keep pests out of it. Dead bugs are a potential food source for other insects. If you don’t skim and vacuum your pool, you are leaving yet another food source to attract pests.
Liquid detergent – Water bugs need air to breath, and they get this by coming to the surface of your pool. You can interrupt this process by spraying a layer of dishwasher detergent to break the surface tension of the pool to keep water bugs from bringing air back underwater with them. This can be effective for keeping water bugs out of your pool because if they can’t breath they will die.
