The Best Pest Control Tips Of 2016

There have been a lot of pest control tips we put out over the year. We figured we would give you some of the stand outs, and a quick refresher before the new year!

Pest control tips: What bit me?

One thing we should remind everyone, since it is a frequent question we get in the pest control business, is that we can’t identify a pest by its bite. Pests don’t usually have a distinctive bite. Also, most things assumed to be bites are actually something completely different.

Some bugs like spiders are thought to bite people all the time, but that just isn’t the case. If you have something you think is a bug bite, it could be an allergic reaction, a skin infection, rash, bed sores, or even the possibility of cancer.

Pest control technicians can’t identify a pest based on a “bite” alone. Be sure to reach out to a doctor if you are concerned about a suspected bite to identify potential issues.

Pest control tips: Zika Virus Info!

The Zika Virus has been in the news a lot this year. From medical professionals, to travel warnings. Even at the Olympics. There are 2 main things to consider about your Zika risk. One is where you live. The other is if you’re pregnant, or plan to be pregnant.

The Zika Virus can be contracted by being bitten by an infected mosquito, having sexual contact with someone who is infected, or having a blood transfusion with someone infected.

The common signs of infection and symptoms are similar to the common cold and flu. This is why people aren’t often properly diagnosed. A few of the symptoms of the Zika Virus are: joint pain, rashes, muscle pain, red eyes, headaches and fever.

The Zika Virus has been linked to birth defects of unborn babies and can cause complications.  So if you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or may be pregnant, it’s best to avoid high risk areas and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

Pest Control Tips: Can’t I just do my own pest control?

Several people choose to do their own pest control, but there are a few reasons why we recommend against it.

First of all, not all pest control products are created equal. There are lots of over the counter pest control products available, but the quality and effectiveness can vary drastically from product to product.

There unfortunately isn’t a magic bullet when it comes to pest control, so there isn’t just one product you can get that will fix every pest issue you may have. This means that you might spend a lot of money trying to get various different products to treat for each individual pest need you come across. This can become very time consuming and expensive.

You might even misidentify the pests you potentially have, therefore wasting more time and money treating for the wrong thing. When you use a pest control service, they have the time and knowledge and resources, to properly take care of pest issues you may have in your home.

Doing it yourself might seem like the more cost effective option, but the lack-luster results from doing it on your own and the variety of products you’ll have to buy don’t really justify it. A pest control service will have higher quality products they can use that require licences to have as well as in depth pest knowledge to treat the right pests the right way the first time, which can save you time and money and get you better results in the long run. In addition, most plans come with a guarantee which may provide you with free service if you do encounter additional issues along the way.

Pest control tips: Winter Pest Control Matters

A common misconception when it comes to pests and pest control is that if you aren’t seeing pests, it means they aren’t there. A couple of things are wrong with this.

One thing is that a lot of pests are nocturnal, so you might be sleeping a large part of the time pests are active. Most pests also like to go into hibernation and hiding during the winter. They tend to hide in cracks and crevices around your home and then nest and breed.

If you leave pests unchecked over the winter they will continue to multiply and come spring time when things warm up, they will start to come out and you can easily have problems on your hands as temperatures rise.

We recommend at least a maintenance pest control service over the winter to keep pests nesting and breeding in check and to prevent any infestations.
