The Zika virus is all over in the news these days, especially with mosquito season in full swing in Minnesota, but there is some good news on the horizon.
A possible cure is in development for the Zika virus
There are a few scientists in the Czech Republic that have found a possible cure for the virus. According to Dave Park in his article HERE “Today, it was announced that Czech scientists had discovered a group of substances that actively combat tick-borne encephalitis as well as the related Zika virus. The team of scientists from the České Budějovice Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Brno Veterinary Research Institute are the first in the world to make the discovery, reports Česká televize. “The substances block the multiplication of the virus within the host’s cells,” said Daniel Růžek, head of the team. “These are referred to as nucleoside analagues which are substances similar to those where have been worked on by the late Antonín Holý.” Despite the breakthrough discovery, the substance still has a long road to clinical testing.”
What is the Zika Virus and how can you stay safe this summer
A cure is good news because the Zika virus, carried by mosquitoes, can lead to Guillain-Barré syndrome if you are an adult as well as some birth defects with yet unborn children. It won’t be ready anytime soon, but it’s good news that there is a cure in the works. Here is a post from a few months ago we did that goes in-depth on the Zika Virus. Click here to see post. It’s important to keep your family safe this summer in Minnesota so there are a few precautions you can take.
One thing you can do around your home to prevent mosquitoes is to get rid of standing water. Standing water is where mosquitoes lay eggs and breed. If you have bird feeders, a pond, or even a pool you should be on the lookout for mosquitoes. You can start by treating your pool with a chlorine shock, unfortunately this isn’t 100% effective because the chemicals have to be just right and many things can be slightly off.
Reduce standing water
You can also make sure that your pool is running constantly. Mosquitoes like stagnant water so if the water is on the move they won’t lay eggs there. If you have pets and leave a water dish outside for them, this could be another spot mosquitoes lay eggs if it doesn’t get much attention. Even something as small as a a bottle cap can house mosquito eggs and larvae.
Wearing long sleeves and clothing and putting on bug spray is another option, however we all have still been bit by mosquitoes while doing that, so they aren’t the most effective options either. Wearing long sleeves is not the most exciting thing, especially when you are outside in the summer heat. Staying inside is really the only option to really keep yourself from getting bitten by mosquitoes, but during some of the best weather in Minnesota, staying indoors isn’t really an option. Another option is to have some help from a pest control service to keep the mosquitoes out.
